Self portrait

(Self portrait, Ramsey Island, 2004)

Ansel Adams felt he was doing well if he achieved twelve decent images in a year. What he actually said has been variously quoted as, “Twelve significant images in any one year is a good crop”, as “Twelve photographs that matter in any one year is a good crop” or even as “Twelve epiphanies…”. Despite much research I have been unable as yet to verify the exact wording – perhaps it was an idle comment made to a colleague while out in the field. The idea is clear though, and interests me, so I select twelve images to represent each year. The majority of my work is made in Wales.

Some things beyond the frame can never be conveyed, and this is how words may combine with an image, to suggest the wider experience of that place at that time. In theory, a photograph should encapsulate its own moment. Words could defy this, so I rarely write about the making of an image. Instead I like to jot down other aspects of the day.
