Mere verisimilitude
Is the camera a toy or a tool? Do we paint or imitate? Pointless speculation perhaps. It is an extension of experience, but to what end? Larkin says, “Ah, solving that question / Brings the priest and the doctor / In their long coats / Running over the fields.”
