About

A scattering of written fragments serve as useful headings for some thoughts about my approach to photography. As with the Portfolio, this section is an ongoing development, and further relevant thoughts will be added here as and when they may occur. The sources can be found here.

Indelible shadows

The fixed nature of a photograph alters our perception. Understanding this helps transcend reality to the emotional and spiritual plane of art - but this fixing is also photography’s downfall. Beauty is transformed, but so every flaw and error is magnified. The eye is remorseless, it is without mercy, and it does not forgive the incongruous withered petal, the insistent corner of tarmac, the frustrating imbalance of form. Weakness is as indelible as beauty.
