About
A scattering of written fragments serve as useful headings for some thoughts about my approach to photography. As with the Portfolio, this section is an ongoing development, and further relevant thoughts will be added here as and when they may occur. The sources can be found here.

Contained location
I used to think in terms of ‘contained landscapes’ and ‘wider landscapes’, the former as close details of landscape, the latter open landscapes with the sky clearly present. The distinction is arbitrary: in every photograph the subject is contained within its frame. To convey a location is to evoke a sense of place in particular conditions, a sense of that habitat in a distinct season.
